I drove my first 2CV when on an ‘exchange’ visit to Charente, where my pen-pal of many years lived, on a farm. It was fun, yes, bare bones, no frills. But also a real eye opener, as we took the car into the fields for harvest and removed the seats to use for our lunchtime picnics. Also, it was so much easier to shift gears than my uncle’s decommissioned Austin London black cab, used to transport larger paintings to and from his gallery! The cab could easily accommodate a 40 x 50 inch frame. My other discovery on that trip was a Solex.
