VeloceToday published an article today about the Competition Department of Citroën and how the SM came to be involved in their rally program — at first in more-or-less stock form in the ‘Rallye du Maroc’ in April 1971. Then, victorious from the Morocco, it was given a ‘bread van’ look when the Competition Department turned to their colleagues in Citroën’s Experimental Department.
Written by Roberto Motta, it is an interesting account of how what is known as the Gr5 ‘Camionette’ SM came to be. You can see it and footage of the SM in its first rally outing in the Rallye du Maroc here: https://velocetoday.com/citroen-sm-gr-5-camionette/
