After more than 20 years of ownership, I’m selling my 1972 SM ongoing restoration project because I don’t have enough motivation anymore to finish it. If you are looking for a SM project, this is a great opportunity because a lot of work has been done already and of course a lot of money has been spent, way more than the asking price, as you can probably guess if you know a little bit about restoring this kind of car to high standards.
It started as a Canadian 2.7-litre version, 5-speed transmission, with steering headlights. I had to find another body so the current one came from France and has been fully restored. The body work has been done and very well done by an experienced and talented professional, from sandblasting the whole body and doing all the sheet metal repair work, to the final paint with the original color « sable métallisé ». The cost of this body work alone is more than the asking price.
The engine has been opened and checked comprehensively by a renowned professional, but not rebuilt to new condition. However, some parts have been replaced, solid exhaust valves have been fitted, new timing chains and tensioner have been installed and the heads have been checked and surfaced by a professional.
The black leather interior is in great condition except for the two front seats for which the leather is quite hard. Applying Leatherique reconditioner multiple times may save them.
A lot of parts have been restored, zinc-plated back to original and/or painted.
A lot of other parts are brand new and ready to go back into the car, for example: interior carpet set (grey), headliner, a lot of rubber parts (seals, and pipes), stainless exhaust manifolds, modern geared starter motor, electronic ignition system from 123 Ignition (first gen), main headlights and many more, I just can’t remember all.
All that is included to put this car back on the road.
The few missing parts are parts that needed to be replaced anyways, like the windshield, the front and rear parts of the exhaust line (the middle part is included, a stainless one) and the air conditioning compressor.
The original Michelin resin wheels can be included or not, as you want.
You can read a lot more and see hundreds of pictures of the work done on my website: www.stephpal.ca/en/sm. The website is available in english and french, chose the language in the main menu if the right language has not been set automatically.
There is still a lot of work to do, of course, but I believe this is a great starting point at a great price for a SM enthusiast who wants a high-quality result.
The car is located in the Montréal area (Québec).
The asking price is $35,000 CAD without the resin wheels (but original steel ones) and $45,000 CAD with them.
