Tatras are arguably even more eclectic than Citroëns. The Tatra 603 is a large rear-engined luxury car which was produced by the Czechoslovakian company from 1956 to 1975. It was a continuation of the series of Tatra streamlined sedans started by the Tatra 77 and then the model 87. In Communist Czechoslovakia only high-ranking party officials and heads of factories were driven in 603s. Some were exported to a number of other countries with a few making their way to Canada and the USA.
Citroënvie member George Klein discovered this 1960’s Tatra 603 promotional film on YouTube. Campy acting aside, we love in the film how they take an affrontal approach to dealing with handling issues that the big Tatras were notorious for. And the re-edit to David Holmes’ “I Heard Wonders” soundtrack just takes it over the top! Sure, like any sane person would weave down the road at 140 km/h with a honk’n V8 hung out over the back wheels!
