As a photographer with a deep passion for the Citroën 2CV, Jerome Wassenaar spent the past four years working on his dream project: making a book about the 2CV subculture. Titled Deuchistes, it is currently in production and is expected to arrive in mid-November this year.
This book is not just about cars. It is about a sociological phenomenon: the Deuchistes, loosely translated as genuine 2CV drivers. These are people who do not simply drive their 2CVs; they live them. They are adventurers, collectors, tinkerers and bon-vivants — often a combination of all these. Deuchistes are not afraid to dream, to travel, to think outside the box or to overhaul an engine in the desert.
Jerome has been to several 2CV meetings in different countries and met many people at their homes from Madagaskar to Norway and from France to Switzerland. His travels have resulted in 35 detailed stories featuring interviews with more than 60 Deuchistes. From a French collector with 640 cars in his garden to a 2CV meeting in Madagascar, and from 2CV cross racing in the Netherlands to the 24-hour 2CV races at Spa-Francorchamps. The photographs and interviews are by Jerome, and the texts were written by Jeroen Booij.
The book is about the people behind the 2CV and what unites them. It is about a subculture Jerome has been part of all of his life, now documented in words and pictures.
