Bonhams to Auction 3 Citroëns and a Voison in Paris

Bonhams has announced that their auction will be held during Rétromobile on January 30th at the historic Polo de Paris. Founded in 1892 by Viscount de la Rochefoucauld-Doudeauville and the Duke of Estrées. Polo de Paris is located just 15 minutes from Rétromobile with complimentary shuttles connecting the two events.

A diverse array of 80 vehicles, from classic cars to modern supercars, will be displayed in this prestigious place, nestled beside the historic Château de Bagatelle from January 27 to 30 before the live sale takes place on the 30th. Among the offerings are a 1934 Citroën C4 Kegresse Autochenille, 1951 Traction Avant 11 BL, a 1972 SM and, not a Citroën, but a rare and fascinating 1939 Voisin C30 Saloon. All are being offered without reserve:

1934 Citroën C4 Kegresse Autochenille (Offered from Les Belles Endormies – The Pierre Strinati Collection)
Estimate: €20,000 – €40,000 — No Reserve

  • Chassis no. AC4F303227
  • Similar to the vehicles used for Citroën’s Croisière Jaune expedition
  • Purchased for the collection in 1984

Pierre Strinati purchased this Autochenille on the March 15, 1984 from Oldtimer Gallery in Toffen, Switzerland. Previously it had been in Belgium with Yves Dumortier as one of the last additions to his collection. The history file contains an old Belgian registration document and extensive literature concerning the Croisière Jaune’.

1951 Citroën 11 BL Traction Avant (Offered from Les Belles Endormies – The Pierre Strinati Collection)
Estimate: €5,000 – €10,000C — No Reserve

Purchased by Jean Strinati on October 17, 1961 for CHF900 (receipt on file). On March 6, 1972 major service was undertaken costing CHF1,260.95, during which the electrical system was checked and the valve timing adjusted. Later that same month, repairs were made to the right rear door and wing; the repaired areas were repainted, as were the sills and wheels, while the bumpers were sent away to be re-chromed.

It is believed that the 89,692 kilometres odometer reading is original. The car retains its original interior. It comes with its original radiator shield and grilles for winter driving, together with some original instruction manuals, service books, old insurance cards, tax receipts, sundry bills, old Swiss registration papers, and a copy of Citroën Traction Avant Gold Portfolio.

1972 Citroën SM Régembeau
Estimate: €40,000 – €60,000 — No Reserve

Although there is a Régembeau label at the rear, it is unclear what enhancements may have been made. This SM appears to be a stock electronic fuel injection model with air-conditioning using the original piston type compressor. Citroën CX power exterior mirrors have been added, as has a Pioneer stereo radio placed in the center console where the original was, but raised shroud was made to accommodate the radio’s increased depth. Cutouts in the lower front valence house 2 additional fog lights. It has the lightweight resin rims that were offered as an option for the SM.

1939 Voisin C30 Saloon (Offered from Les Belles Endormies – The Pierre Strinati Collection)
Estimate: €225,000 – €275,000 — No Reserve

In 1937, following the restructuring of Voisin, the company’s new owner commissioned the production of a new model: the C30. Continental Motors’ 3.6-litre six-cylinder Graham engine was chosen for the C30 and could be ordered with a supercharger, which this car has. It boosted maximum power from 90 to 116bhp. The outbreak of WW2 put a stop to the C30’s brief production run (around 20 or 30 were made, only five of which are known to survive) and they are historically significant as the last Voisin automobiles.

This C30 was first registered on June 27, 1939 as ‘7405 RM 6’, then a Parisian number. It was subsequently registered as ‘8673 DR 75’ to Emile Janet, residing at 4, rue Clement Marot in Paris, on March 24, 1955. There is a plaque on the dashboard saying ‘René Janet, 16, rue Franklin, Paris’, which was mistakenly thought to refer to the coachbuilder (it may refer to an owner of the car, maybe linked to Emile Janet?). However, the car’s actual coachbuilder is still unknown. Mr Strinati imported the Voisin from France into Switzerland in October 1963.

In December 1984, the car was treated to some restoration work: the body was repainted in BMW Savanna Beige, the headlining redone, the radiator shell repaired, the chrome re-plated, and the Plexiglas windows in the roof replaced. Some black and white photographs of the C30 (still wearing its French Parisian registration plates) taken by Mr Strinati show it in a darker colour. It is believed that the car was originally painted dark green, as upon close inspection traces of dark green paint were found in various places. Apart from the aforementioned changes the car remains highly original.
