For Sale – 1974 Citroën SM I.E.

After more than 18 years of ownership, I’m selling my 1974 SM “Injection Électronique”. It was manufactured in October 1974 so it was considered a 1975 model-year at the time. The odometer indicates only 67,000 kms.

This is a French 2.7-litre fuel injected model with a 5-speed manual transmission that I imported from France in 2007. I took great care of the car since then. It won the Peoples’ Choice Award at the Saratoga Springs Rendezvous in 2007, and has been significantly improved since.

I did a lot of mechanical work, especially in 2009, when I took the engine and transmission out to clean, restore and replace a lot of things in the engine compartment, in order to make the car reliable. This included replacing the engine timing chains (with modern “no maintenance” IWIS chains) and tensioner, installing a reinforced oil pump shaft, installing a new water pump impeller and seal, installing a full new clutch assembly, and much more. I later installed an electric ignition system from 123Ignition (first gen.) and replaced the whole injection calculator wiring harness with a brand new one to avoid any future headaches. I recently installed brand new headlights (the main ones) and 2 new rear suspension spheres. The 2 front suspension spheres are coming soon (screwed ones, not welded).

The air conditioning is working great, with moderns R134 gas, but the compressor is a bit noisy, I suspect a bearing noise.

The “tobacco” leather interior is in fantastic condition; this is a highlight of this car. All leather pieces look fantastic and are as soft as they should. The interior smells exactly as I remember when I was a child and my father had a SM.

Another highlight of this car are the original Michelin resin wheels, in great condition, with their original chromed caps on the wheel bolts. These wheels are worth at least $10,000 by themselves.

The paint looks really nice but there are some defects, especially some big scratches on the right side (door and fender, see pictures). The car has been repainted before I bought it, I don’t know when exactly, and the quality of this work is not great. The car is priced accordingly.

You can read a lot more and see hundreds of pictures of the work done in this car on my website: www.stephpal.ca/en/sm-ie. The website is available in English and French, chose the language in the main menu if the right language has not been set automatically.

The car is located in the Montréal area (Québec).

Price: $45,000 (CAD) without the resin wheels and $55,000 with them.
