Two Citroéns made it into Top Gear’s choice for the most fun you can have motoring while being conscious of fuel consumption.
Of course, we knew that an A series Citroën would make the list, but we were pleasantly surprised to see that the folks at Top Gear have embraced the Méhari. As they say (and any Méhari owner can attest); “driving a Méhari at any speed is an event. It’s a conspicuous companion at every moment, an antithesis to the quiet-butler mannerisms of anything more modern or mainstream.”
And since the DS has always fascinated reviewers and outperformed any comparable-sized sedans pitted against it in road tests over the years, it made the list with Top Gear commenting; “The DS, as much by default as by design, manages to be the rarest of contradictions. Ancient, massive and characterful, yet also abstemious, especially in the later fuel-injected models.” And they go on to conclude: “Combined with its decently aerodynamic shape, old-school narrow tyres and relaxed nature, it’s possible to extract as much as 30mpg from the 70-year-old saloon.”
What others cars made the cut? It was a rather weird mix:
- Mazda MX-5
- Renaultsport Clio 182
- Volkswagen Golf GTI MkV
- Mini
- Porsche Taycan
- Ariel Nomad
- BMW i8
- Caterham
- Alpine A110
- Toyota MR2
- Hyundai i20N
- Lotus Elise
