Bonhams Optimistic of SM Sale at Scottdale

This 1972 Citröen SM 2.7L 5-speed will be crossing the block on January 27, 2022 at Bonhams’ Scottsdale auction. It will be sold without reserve, and the auction house is hoping it will fetch between $50,000 – 70,000 USD.

To help achieve that objective they state in the listing that it has a “carefully preserved interior with lovely patina“. For an SM to be going for their expected value, a ripped rear seat, a resown lower section of the drivers’ seat in leather that is an obvious non-match, and a missing Citroën chevrons badge that should be on the steering wheel, makes one wonder who is going to pay that kind of money?

Moreover, the engine bay sports the original piston AC compressor, (rather than the rotary type fitted after-market by many owners), so how soon is the engine going to need some service because of the strain induced by it over years?

Granted it has the desirable original Continental Edison radio found on European models, but note the rip and poor fit of the side console cover.

And it is a 5-speed with a European front and back end, but will someone be willing to pay $50K US or more + buyers premium for this one?

  1. Looks like it sold for $44,800. I checked with the auction house for additional photos and was very surprised to see that the driver’s seat leather was all ripped at the top of the seat with foam jutting out…
