Many long-time Citroënists know the French author Fabien Sabatès, who has already published in the 1980s, his first publication on the double chevron brand. Now, his latest biographical work titled “Bertoni” has been published and just in time for Christmas.
“Bertoni” is the new edition of the first generation book published in 1998 on the life and work of the brilliant sculptor and designer Flaminio Bertoni hired by André Citroën to body the Traction Avant. It was his first car design and in doing so Bertoni used clay modelling to determine the ultimate shape, a practice that became commonplace in the automotive industry and continues to this day.
During his years at Citroën up to his death in 1964, Bertoni was instrumental in the design of the 2CV, H Van, DS and Ami 6 plus a number of concept cars and prototypes of that era.
At the book presentation in the Villa Recalcati earlier this year, at which Bertoni’s son Leonardo Bertoni was invited, many guests were impressed by the memories and experiences of the tremendously creative genius.
This updated and revised version of the biography contains many yet-to-date unpublished details of Bertoni’s work.
