The Sure Way Scam

Scammers are getting quite sophisticated these days. One of our Citroënvie members in California saw a Peugeot 504 Coupe online and thought he would inquire about it. Fortunately, he got suspicious within the first few emails and contacted me. I wanted to see how the scam might play out and what I got back has been quite enlightening.

First — a little history. It had been for sale online before:

Classic.com had this “1973 Peugeot 504 Pininfarina Coupe 4-Speed” showing a VIN of 1492980, indicating it was last seen/posted on September 23, 2021 (the listing is marked “Off Market”).

It was sold on Bring a Trailer for $26,000 on September 23, 2021

And now — a detailed account of how the scam played out:

Our California Citroënvie member found the1973 Peugeot 504 Coupe on Lisitfy Hub.  The photos in the listing are the same as on Bring a Trailer but with the plate info blacked-out.  The pic of the mileage is the same as what they are trying to pawn off on Listify Hub.   

Upon responding by the send button in the ad with the pre-inserted text “Hi there! I am interested in your 1973 Peugeot 504. Please give me more details.” he received the following:

Thank you for your interest in my vehicle, and apologies for the delayed response. I work as a cargo pilot and am currently on a long-haul rotation, which means I’m often deployed on extended international trips with rest periods away from home.

The vehicle is still available and is in excellent condition. I’d be happy to send you detailed photos if you’d like.

I’m selling it because it’s not used very often, and I’d like to reduce my monthly expenses. At the moment, the vehicle and all related documents, including the title, are in Maine and are being held by a shipping company that will manage the sale on my behalf.

If you’re still interested, please let me know and I’ll be glad to share more details.

He responded by emailing:

Yes, please send photos of the car and the title.

A day later, Gamber sent this email:

Thank you for your interest in purchasing my vehicle. I’ve attached some photos of the vehicle for you to review its condition.

To ensure a secure and transparent transaction, and because I am unable to handle the sale in person, I have arranged for an authorized logistics company to manage the entire process on my behalf. In accordance with standard consumer-protection and distance-selling regulations, they will handle the shipping, full documentation, and payment procedure in a legally compliant manner.

Please note that although on-site inspection at their facility isn’t possible (as it is strictly a shipping and processing hub rather than a public warehouse), the vehicle remains fully insured while in their custody and throughout delivery. The company has already performed their technical verification and confirmed that the vehicle is in excellent working condition.

Additionally, I have a formal agreement with them that grants you a 2–3 day inspection and evaluation period upon delivery. If, for any reason, the vehicle does not meet your expectations, you may return it during that window without penalty, in alignment with standard return-policy guidelines for remote transactions.

The vehicle is in excellent condition, and I stand fully behind its quality.

These photos Gamber sent were all lifted from the Bring a Trailer listing.

At this stage, I suggested that he continue while I also get involved. I wanted to play him to the point that the shipper is sending me the bogus deal paperwork to purchase the car.  (See below).   I asked him to email Gamber one more time (he was using robertgamber568@gmail.com and not robert.gamber@cargolux.delivery in his sig) and say;

“I haven’t heard back from you about the 1973 Peugeot 504 that you are selling.  Can you tell me if it is still for sale?  I am interested in buying the car.”  

We were hoping he would get back saying the car is still available.  At that point we could call him out and expose the scam and the double dealing.  He did not respond but by that time I had begun to play Gamber on my end. I wrote:

I am interested in your 1973 Peugeot 504. Please give me more details. Where is it located?

Gamber responded with virtually the same initial email as sent to California:

Hello George,
 
Thank you for your interest in my vehicle, and apologies for the delayed response. I work as a cargo pilot and am currently on a long-haul rotation, which means I’m often deployed on extended international trips with rest periods away from home.

So, I now had him on the hook and emailed:

Yes , I am still interested.  Please send me the photos and location information.

 The 2nd email to me from Gamber was the same as sent to California. This time it was addressed as Gdyke and not George:

Hi Gdyke,

Thank you for your interest in purchasing my vehicle. I’ve attached some photos of the vehicle for you to review its condition.

Wanting to now get into the exactly how this scam plays out, I came back with:

Hello Mr Gamber,
OK, please put me in touch with your logistics company for me to arrange payment, documentation and shipping.  
You said you will stand fully behind the quality of the 1973 Peugeot 504.  I gather that is stated in the formal agreement that you have with the logistics company?   I trust a copy of the agreement will be provided as part of the documentation to ensure both satisfaction and protection on my part?

Gamber got back to me and introduced the “shipping company” who happened to also claim they act as escrow on car sales:

Hi George,

The shipping company’s website is https://surewayinc.us/ , and their telephone number is 207-803-5639. If you provide me with your phone number, I can ask the shipping company agent to contact you directly. 

The purchasing process is quite straightforward.

First, please provide me with your full name and address, so I can forward your details to the shipping company. Once they receive this information, the shipping company will initiate the process and send us the sales contract, bill of lading, invoice, and tracking number for the transaction.

Once these documents are issued, it means the transaction has officially started. You will then need to review, sign, and return the documents, along with the payment confirmation, to the shipping company.

After you receive the vehicle, you will have 3 days to inspect it. If you are not satisfied, you may request a refund, and a representative from the shipping company will arrange to collect the vehicle. In that case, your payment will be refunded within 24 hours.

This is a simple and commonly used process.

Please let me know what you think and send me your details so we can proceed.

Needing to see the documentation, I did a search on SureWay that actually came up clean, and I called them at the number on their website. The guy that answered gave me spiel about them having the car and being able deliver it the 3 day guarantee of satisfaction (even to Canada when I mentioned that it would have to cross the border and duties be paid), but he insisted that I could not get documentation in writing unless I closed the sale with Gamber. I asked if I could come see the car but he made a lame excuse that their warehouse was closed to the public. So, I responded to Gamber providing my phone number and address and then mentioned in my email that:

I just called the shipping company.  They said that they can provide pictures of the car with them if I request that by email, which I did.  They also told me they cannot provide any other information, until I contact you and close the sale at the agreed selling price. My address and the delivery address would be 36 Lisburn Cr. Toronto, ON, Canada M2J 2Z5.  Not sure how I close a deal with you when they are apparently acting as escrow for the sale.

Hello,
I was speaking with you a few minutes ago about a 1973 Peugeot 504 that you said you have at your premises.  Please consider this the request you said must be submitted to send me pics of the car in your possession.

That seemed to work as I got this back from Gamber:

Hi George,

 Thank you for the update, and I appreciate you taking the time to speak with the shipping company.

I received your phone number and delivery information, and I’ve forwarded everything to the shipping company.

I can accept $17,000 for the vehicle, and I’ll cover the shipping costs, so there won’t be any additional transportation charges for you.

Once we’ve agreed on the price, the shipping company will prepare the purchase agreement and invoice. They handle the payment and delivery process, and you’ll have the opportunity to inspect the vehicle upon delivery in accordance with their inspection policy.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I look forward to hearing from you.

Oddly, I had not made any effort to pay Gamber, but I got this email from Sure Way with a tracking number:

Clicking on the surewayinc.us link produced this Package Details window to which I did not respond;

I heard nothing for 4 days and then Gamber emailed me saying:

Hi George,
Are you still interested in purchasing the Peugeot?

Well, I had one more chance to get the docs, so I emailed him back:

Hi  Robert,
Yes I am interested.  I mentioned in my last email to you that your shipper told me they cannot provide any other information until I contact you and close the sale at the agreed selling price.  At that point they would provide me with the necessary shipping documentation.  Can you please provide the sale documentation to buy the car?  You have my address and phone number in this email thread.

To which he responded the same day with:

Hi George,

I can accept $17,000 for the vehicle, and I’ll cover the shipping costs, so there won’t be any additional transportation charges for you.

Once you confirm that you accept the price, I’ll ask the shipping company to begin the process. They will then prepare and send us a purchase contract containing all the details of the transaction, including the vehicle information, the agreed purchase price, the shipping arrangements, and the terms of the sale.

Please let me know if you accept the price, and I’ll have them get everything started.

I let him percolate for a day and then emailed him back with:

Hi Robert,
I accept the price.  Now we need complete the documentation to assure that I get the vehicle.  Have the shipping company send me the documentation.

At this point I was contacted by “Sure Way” the transportation/escrow company with this email:

The tracking number for your item is: SU17853412586CA.

Odd that a tracking number was already issusd on sale I had yet to pay for, but that same day links to the docs I wanted to see were emailed to me:

Using the download links I got the following:

A questionable contract as the Owner’s Signature has no printed name below it and the signature does not read to be Robert Gamber.

There is no mileage listed for the vehicle.

The Bill of Lading shows no zip codes. The Carrier Reg No. seems to be bogus.

Pickup Information shows the pickup Date & Time to be July 29, 2026 – 5:08 am from Robert Gamber in Springvale, ME. But the car is supposedly already in the possession of Sure Way. The zip code is missing from the pickup address (and also in the blurred delivery address).

OK, I had the deal. Now I needed to probe the inconsistencies… First wanted Sure Way to send me a photo of the car in their facility. I called them again with that request and they came back with:

Hi George,
Thank you for your interest in our services.
After carefully discussing your request with the owner, we have received approval to share the photo with you. Please find the requested photo attached.

On close inspection, the photo appeared to be AI generated. It distorted the lower front and wheel placement of the two cars in the background as seen through the passenger window. Notice that the front grill of the Peugeot is black (missing the 3 horizontal bars) and it extends down to the bumper.

In the above email Sure Way has now become SureWay (no space) and there was a new address: 123 Beaver Hill Rd, Springvale, ME 04083 which according to Google is Cedar Hill Farm.

AI made a boo-boo there as it tried to render in the grill from a 1975 model while retaining the 1973’s bumper stops.  

And the headlights in AI render are now all white, (probably interpreted from the 1975 Peugeot 504 Coupe).

Other than that AI did an amazing job rendering the rest of the car, making it look like it was actually sitting in their warehouse.

To that I responded:

Thank you.  I will wait to hear further from the owner to complete the sale transaction.

I heard nothing back from Gamber, but I tried to probe Sure Way further by saying:

I was unable to verify the VIN and registration of the Peugeot with Mr Gamber prior to making the payment.  Can you please send me a photo of the VIN plate on the car and a copy of the registration you have for the car?

They emailed me this photo (the same one as in the BaT listing) confirming the VIN, and they also sent this registration which had a number of issues relevant to the sale:

The registration certificate is from North Dakota. It shows the owner as Robert Gamber at 3834 Kingston Dr. Bismark, ND 58503 USA. I could not find any record of a Robert Gamber in Bismark, ND. If he relocated to Maine, why was that not mentioned and the car registered in Maine? I could not find a Robert Gamber registered in Maine either. Again, the VIN is incorrect (OK maybe entered wrong up registration) but the odometer reading states 65,000, yet when the car sold on Bring A Trailer in 2021, the odometer showed 77,312.

By this time I had what I needed to know the scam, and I called Sure Way and told the guy on the line that I was concerned that this transaction was not legit. I cited the VIN on their docs being too long (as it included the model Type AND the Serial Number). A few minutes later this email arrived:

Hi George,

Thank you for using our services.

After consulting with my supervisors and the owner, I can confirm the following: VIN numbers from the year this car was manufactured were shorter than modern VIN numbers. This is standard for vehicles of that era, and you can verify this independently if you wish. We would be happy to send you photos of the VIN plate and title for your own verification.
Please also keep in mind that we are a shipping and logistics company handling delivery and payment processing on behalf of our customers. We do not manage the vehicle sales themselves, and we work to accommodate the needs of all parties involved.
We have attached the requested documents for your review.

The two links, FMCSA License and MapQuest, piqued my curiosity not to let go of the bone quite yet. A search of their claimed USDOT 296338 (at CarrierSource) on the FMCSA License showed no records matching it.

On the FMCSA License page their USDOT Number is listed as 2224686 ! And the business address listed at 314 CENTRAL AVE. DUNKIRK, NY 14048.

Moreover, the phone number on the page is for a Papiliions of Rinelander (supposedly in the restaurant industry), reportedly at that address and (of course) no longer in service

Dunkirk NY is located southwest of Buffalo on the shore of Lake Erie, nowhere near and address shown on the Shure Way website. The street view (below) of 314 CENTRAL AVE. DUNKIRK, NY shows no sign of a Sure Way office, and no Papiliions of Rinelander either!

Yet another tip off that the Sure Way website was a scam is that it was probably created from a template where they did not pick up on the Subsidiary showing 2 companies that have Caveford Inc and Riguezna LLC, that are not at the addresses shown (which happen to be the same as Sure Way) and they are not in the shipping/transportation industry.

Armed with all the information and documentation I wanted to see, I placed a call to Sure Way and told them I was onto their scam. The only way they were going to see $17,000 USD out of me was if I could come to their warehouse in Maine and physically see the car. There was about 15 seconds of silence on their end before I ended the call, never to hear from them again.

I hope you found this thread about what transpired insightful. Scammers these days are evolving their methods to seem pretty convincing to many vehicle buyers and sellers.

Bottom line — Be wary of online ads and watch out for scams line this. If you are selling you car, get payment in full by wire-transfer or cash before letting go of what you have.  And if it is cash, go to the bank with the buyer to ensure the bills are not counterfeit.  Do not take checks of any kind!
