The famous 200+ mph SM and the custom SM pick-up built by SM World are to be sold at Hemmings Geared Online | Scottsdale Edition auction on January 18-22, 2021.
The sale is sure to garner world attention in the Citroën community. The coupe, with dual turbochargers feeding the Maserati V6 engine, in 1987 set the land speed record for production vehicles in its class at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah – traveling 325 km/h (202 mph).
Constructed by Jerry Hathaway and driven to its world record by his then wife Sylvia, the coupe, the pick up and the accompanying hydropneumatic suspension trailer, are to be sold as a bundle, but under rather unfortunate circumstances…. Jerry describes the listing in this manner; “When your ex-wife takes your life’s work and sells it at an auction.” Ouch!
What is being sold are:
- 1972 Citroën SM Land Speed Racer Chassis No. SB 5805
- 1973 Citroën SM Custom Pickup Chassis No. 00SD0414
- 2001 Special Construction Car Carrier Trailer VIN. CA 895735
- Included in the sale are a coffee table built from the record-breaking Maserati V-6 engine and a fire suit used by Sylvia Hathaway.

Update – Jan. 22, 2021: Sold for $203,500 US. The combination goes to Europe. The new owner will extend his display area to give it a prominent place. It might be displayed in one of Europe’s major classic car events in autumn.
