At Rétromobile in Paris at the end of the month, the Euro SM Club will showcase a pairing of the iconic Citroën SM and a large Concorde replica, presented together as two symbols of an era that believed engineering ambition had no ceiling — when “the sky is the limit” was a design brief as much as a slogan.
The SM (produced from 1970 to 1975) is widely regarded as a technical milestone of the high-mechanical, pre-digital age — an advanced grand tourer that demonstrated how much performance and refinement could be achieved in a front-wheel-drive layout. Key technology highlights visitors can discover on the
stand include:
- Hydropneumatic suspension for high-speed stability and long-distance comfort, a core Citroën
hallmark of the period. - The DIRAVI self-centering power steering concept, engineered to reduce unwanted road
feedback and deliver a uniquely steady high-speed feel. - A distinctive grand touring concept powered by a Maserati-derived V6, reflecting a rare Franco-Italian collaboration in a French flagship.
The SM’s body was styled under Citroën designer Robert Opron, whose work gave the car its unmistakably aerodynamic, forward-leaning silhouette—an object that looked “from the future” the day it arrived.
Why pair the SM with Concorde?
The SM has often been described as a “Concorde for the road,” and the comparison goes beyond shape. Both were born from a period of bold European optimism in technology and prestige, prioritizing advanced solutions even when complexity was pricey.
At the Euro SM Club stand in Hall 7.1, visitors will be invited to explore what these icons share:
- A systems-thinking approach : stability, control and performance engineered as an integrated
whole rather than as isolated features. - A strong human factor: like Concorde crews, SM drivers quickly learn that mastery comes
from understanding the machine’s logic—not just operating it. - The same promise of effortless speed: long-distance travel made to feel shorter, smoother, and
more special than its contemporaries.
Rétromobile 2026 will be held at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles with opening hours:
