Project S was the name Citroën used when they secretly worked on a super car – the SM. “Project S” is also the title of a 45-minute film about the creation of this great work and the enormous impact this can have on people.
In the film, philosopher, poet and artist Robert Opron who was the chief designer on Project S, reflects on the creation of the SM and the power of good design.
Produced by two Dutch filmmakers, Dirk Besteman and Davied Eliasar who have a passion for the SM, the film beautifully encapsulates the SM — a fast, comfortable gran-turismo automobile with a unique look and technology.
Historical archive footage of illustrious drivers such as Johan Cruijff illustrate the role of the SM in media and popular culture.
Back in 2017 Dirk and Davied contacted Jerry Hathaway with the objective being that the film include a North American SM element. Besides interviewing Jerry, they asked if could arrange a meeting with Jay Leno for an interview. Jay is among many people impacted by the SM and talks in great depth about his love for the SM and the role of cars in his life.
They also managed to arrange an interview with Jerry Hathaway’s estranged wife Sylvia, and incorporated footage of Jerry and her building and racing their supercharged SM at the Bonneville salt flats.
The film recently won a prize at the Greece film festival. View it online here:
