Mattel is actively collaborating with MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) to offer special Hot Wheels models. This partnership is part of a five-year global collaboration aimed at merging the worlds of contemporary art, design, and play. The Citroën DS 23 and Jaguar E-Type Roadster chosen for this partnership were selected to represent Hot Wheels for Mattel Creations. Each were selected because they represent milestones in car design, showcasing advancements in engineering and creativity.

Both full-size cars are on permanent display at the MoMA and are two of only nine automobiles to have that distinction.

The other seven cars on permanent display at the MoMA are:
- 1938 Volkswagen Beetle (Type 1)
- 1946 Cisitalia 202 GT
- 1957 Fiat 500
- 1963 Chevrolet Corvette
- 1965 Porsche 911
- 1981 DeLorean DMC-12
- 1998 Smart ForTwo
Their aesthetic beauty aligns well with MOMA’s focus on modern art and design. These cars are not just vehicles but are considered works of art in their own right.
Just how collectible will the Jaguar E-Type Roadster and Citroën DS 23 models be? The pictures on their boxes are misleading as they show the actual cars. Both models from the MOMA Hot Wheels collaboration are produced at a scale of 1:64. Consequently, the details on each model are obviously compromised. The Jaguar’s steering wheel, lights and tires are quite crude, while the Citroën DS 23 looks more like an armored car with thick window pillars, disproportionate door handles and lacking detail in the lights and turn signals. The external rear view mirror is hideous!

The collaboration between Mattel Creations and MoMA goes beyond just this pair of Hot Wheels models. It’s a lineup of seven Mattel toys and games that celebrate the launch of MoMA’s Samuel and Ronnie Heyman Family Art Lab and its related programs. The Art Lab is an interactive space tailored to be enjoyed by adults and children equally to experiment, play, and create ideas within modern and contemporary art. Some of the topics it has explored are those of sound, shapes, colors, nature, and many others that relate to the world and art around us.
You will be able to buy them along with the rest of the Mattel Creations and MoMA collaboration collection beginning on November 11 on the Mattel Creations website, the MoMA online store, or in person at the MoMA Design Studios in New York and Japan.
